head on the door

My front door has been locked since 10:44pm last night. Called my mom and told her I wouldn't make it for dinner. I just can't bring myself to leave the house, even though I can't get much done on my paper and I'm restless inside. Eating rolls with butter and drinking milk. I probably won't leave the house til tomorrow for work. Where would I go?

Torn between wanting to sleep til it's all over, and wanting to stay up. Perhaps scrub my bathroom floors in the middle of the night like a speed freak. Except, without the drugs.

The people who live behind my mother have two dogs, a golden retriever and some little yip-yap dog. The woman brought the dogs into the clinic a few times, and is rather clueless about animals. (Didn't even know dogs needed heartworm prevention medication, for example.) A couple nights ago, near midnight, my mother and grandfather heard an incredible ruckus start outside. The sound of dogs fighting, howling and crashing.

My mother, of course, runs outside to see if one of our animals is involved. It becomes clear that it is the dogs behind us. She could hear the little one screaming, and the larger one barking. The woman was screaming the larger dog's name and "No!" over and over again. Suddenly, it was silent. Dead silent. My mother could only hear the woman stepping onto her porch and sobbing. In the morning, neither dog was back there. Our best guess is that the larger dog killed the smaller one, and she got rid of them both. Very curious and terrible.

how distressing and sad

It's strange, isn't it? I wonder what started it. Probably a little scuffle over food or space that turned violent. Considering the size of the dogs, it really wouldn't have taken much. *shakes head* I don't understand people who keep dogs, but have no idea how to train or take care of them. It's sad.

It's infuriating.

People should require training to have pets if they cannot understand their needs. Of course this will never happen with the pet overpopulation and all. And thanks to the breeders who never stop :(

oh yes

Yes, it's something I've always felt quite strongly about. If one is going to take an animal of any kind, one should have the knowledge to take care of that animal properly.

Especially in the case of dogs and other animals that require training. They are animals, glorious animals. Just because we consider them domesticated doesn't mean they're harmless as stuffed toys. They're muscle and bone, teeth and sinew, strength and instinct, fantastic creations. People need to acknowledge that and learn how to work with these animals.

Must... suppress.. urge to rant.... ;)

wow. i am in full agreement with you here and have OFTEN had to suppress the ranting urge on this topic! I own a siberian husky and one of the most common signs of this irresponsiblity in ownership is when i see these incredible creatures young and OVERWEIGHT! argh! (takes breath) I also own an african grey parrot and THAT is a whole different story altogether! But, to keep this short, I learned that parrots, not dogs or cats, are the #1 most given up animal in US. #1!! and why is that?? people have NO idea what they are getting into and unlike a dog, if you leave a parrot alone it will scream, bite and eventually maim itself. sad. terrible. humanity can hurt.

eh. but there is always evolution! lol

(and HI! btw... i accidentally clicked random yesterday and there you were and i couldnt help reading and adding you.. i hope you dont mind. i really like the way you think :)

Hello. Nice to meet you. :)

People have no clue about birds. It's quite sad, because parrots are rather smart creatures.

My aunt Tricia used to have a gorgeous pair of Huskies when she lived in Alaska. She would rant about people overfeeding their dogs all the time. ;)

I had a dog like that, and now that he's gone I'm much happier. He was a crazy chow mix. I'm definitely a cat person.

I don't normally say any dog is more prone to violence than another. But there is something about chows that I don't trust. Just a feeling I suppose.

They really don't act like other dogs. They are more like wild cats. They are very independent.

My god, that's just freaky...

Rather out of the ordinary. It does happen, one just never expects it to happen so close. What a shame.

Yes. Quite sad.
