its morning yet

threeplusfireI stayed up late last night, talking with Derek. Amazing after years how we can slip right back into that easy friendship. It was like being sixteen again, just in different houses. It turns out we live right across the highway from each other. He has a fluffy orange cat named Angel, and it was slightly eerie to remember my own orange cat.
Derek was something like a brother to me in high school, an older brother I could hang out with and sometimes kiss. I remember going to his junior prom along with his girlfriend Cynthia and the English exchange student I had a crush on. Going to the Cure concert with Derek, Casey and John, and how the Volvo broke down near campus and we called John's parents on the CB radio in the car. The Halloween where Derek was a Droog, and I was Andy Warhol. Listening to the U2 cds, Depeche Mode, the Cure and Garbage. The time I spent in the journalism room with those boys was in a way the best thing to happen to me.
So strange to feel sixteen and twenty one at the same time. But pleasant, really. I'm so glad he emailed me out of the blue, and so glad we will see more of each other.
This morning I recieved a collect call from a prison, from someone named Bill. I rejected the charges, remembering the stories this summer about the phone scams and enormous bills racked up by using a glitch in the prison phone system. Now I feel weird about it.
So much work to do for tomorrow. I need to get started.
