Reading about my former place of employment makes me realize that temp work is a glorified form of day labour. What I did was precisely like what goes on with all the men waiting in empty parking lots around Austin in the morning.

A peaceful day. Read lots of Harry Potter, worked on my Christmas cards, went to work. Saw the Wildebeast in the store, and minutes after she left all the power went out. I wonder if bad karma causes electrical shorts. It was kind of fun, except for the customers.

A regular day, aside from the violent fits of coughing. I couldn't speak at the register when a customer asked me a question, so I had to gesture at another employee for an answer. In the middle of coughing, I thought of all the coughing that Snape does in various bits of fanfic and started to laugh. Or rather, convulse and cough. Which must have seemed horrific for the customers.

I would love to know if lots of the people drawn to Snape were sickly and brilliant children, because it seems that way.

Excellent point. I would not be surprised.

day laborers know they're doing shitscrap work no one else wants to do, and they are paid in cash by the hour each evening. none of that promise of being hired on and getting stock/medical benefits to sweeten the carrot...
