Sunday lunch
Feb. 10th, 2002 01:51 pmLa Madeline, with Melynda. I hope one day our schedules can coincide enought that we could make a weekly habit of this. Especially when it's gorgeously 54 outside and the wind is blowing through an empty wide sky. Soup and crepes and quiche and such things.
I notice a profound psychological impact open floorspace has upon me. It makes me feel more sane, less restless. Though right now I have far too much homework. I am sorely tempted to work my story instead.

Re: yay for yummy French food.
Date: 2002-02-14 08:57 pm (UTC)Yes, I'm studying Czech & Russian at UT in Austin. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. I'm doing a conference course on Josef Skvorecky this semester, my all time favorite Czech writer. Excellent stuff.
Feel free to write me as well. It's so nice to have a bit of conversation.
Re: yay for yummy Russian books.
Date: 2002-02-15 05:45 am (UTC)I started the other way around, wtih Dostoevsky. I read Crime & Punishment in a frenzied two days and it changed everything for me. After working through every 'classic' Russian author I could get my hands on, I started reading those delightfully insane 20th century writers. (With a sideways trip via Nabokov)
Have you read St Petersburg, by Andrei Biely? It's so so so good.

Date: 2002-02-15 08:37 pm (UTC)The thing I admired most about Nabokov was his intimate and complete grasp of two very different languages. That he could write with such style in Russian and English blows me away.
I took a Dostoesvky class a couple semesters ago and it was quite entertaining. At one point my professor threatened violence against a student who wouldn't stop berating him about C&P. Very fun. Be sure to get the new Pevear/Volokhonsky translations. They have excellent notes.
From what I remember, we lived in a nice little neighborhood with sidewalks. I want to say 41st street. It was near my elementary school. You know, I really should see Luboock again one of these days. I haven't been there in years.
