My first exam in Roman Private Lives came back today, solid B. I'm pleased with it. Spent my afternoon studying some, reading. A frustrating day in Czech. I'd like to learn to speak Czech, not act, thank you very much. The idea of acting is far more appealing than the reality to me. I'd much rather build sets and reserve any acting for more private performances.

There's Thai food in my fridge that smells of basil and peanuts. I talked with Gene a lot today, and was sorry to leave. Today was a day of many odd, small realizations.

My degree will be in Czech language in Literature, with a minors in Russian and journalism. A nice, unemployable Liberal Arts degree. What did you earn yours in, may I ask?

I want to stay in academia, but I think I need a year or so off before I start grad school. I've been in college since I was 17. It is time I learned to do something a bit different, to clear my head.

Philosophy and History and an effective minor in Classics. That was back in '94. Since then, Ive been doing my damnedest to take at least a couple classes per year...mostly classical language courses (four semesters latin, three of ancient greek, one of Egyptian Hieroglyphics).

I cant decide whether my next language will be Mandarin Chinese or Arabic, though it would be nice to learn some Russian. Having learned Greek, I can read Cyrillic phonetically quite fine...though Im sure it would be much more interesting if knew what the hell the words meant :)

Don't get too attached to the "real world". Your mind is just as much a muscle as any other in your body and subject to atrophy. And if youre as much an infoholic as I, you'll be finding that process utterly intolerable.

Is there a 'real' world?

If you mean the world of the 40 hour or more work week, I've been living there too. I've worked full time through most of my college years. Other than paying my tuition and rent, it's only given me a desire to avoid working for dot-coms and bookstores in the future. I'd much rather stay in college for the rest of my life. I do miss the dot-com job just because I could spend my day online reading the AP wire as I worked.

I would vote for Arabic, but that is just a quirky personal preference. One can never have too many languages. The Slavic languages are my favorite, for their musical cadences and the literature. It's even better when you know what the words mean. ;)
