mourning

Insidious creeping mold in the walls of the old apartment managed to sneak under my bookshelf. On the lowest level, there isn't any wood backboard. All my Edith Wharton, my Robert Anton Wilson, my copy of The Once and Future King, my collections of fairytales, old and new, and my lesbian vampire erotica book have all been destroyed. I'm heartbroken.

Oh god.
How could this happen?
Well it's rather obvious isn't it?
I knew we had mold in the closet, but they cleaned it out.
You shouldn't trust other people to do a proper job of something important.
I know I know. Shut up.

I knew moving would bother him.

Let's not even get started on my packing methods. I was tempted to tell him to go back things himself instead of muttering about mixing sheets and shoes.

Losing those books pains me. The Wharton in paticular. She's my favorite American novelist, and I read those books over and over. She certainly knew how to skewer people.

Obe of the best used bookshops in the world is here -- perhaps you'll be able to replace them affordably here in the city, and then you can ship them back so they'll be waiting for you.

I can see the sheets and shoes being very upsetting for him. But, shoes GO ON THE GROUND! I do sheets and dishes myself.

An excellent idea.

Ahahah. Yes, they do go on the ground, but they were all in the bedroom and all in the way yesterday.

I think he'll be fine once I unpack everything. He does like the closet arrangement here. It's directly adjoining the bathroom in my bedroom, so getting dressed does not involve so much wandering around.

I told you. He's like cats.

When I lived in Washington, my apartment had this huge walkin closet/dressing room, that youhad to go through to get to the bathroom. It was cool, and had built in shelving and everything. It was a compulsive's dream.

Why can't you have an apartment like that now?
Because I live in New York, dipshit.
Oh. No need to be rude.

Sounds like my closet. It's so big. I think I might have to buy more shoes, so it won't look so empty.

And yes, cats. Indeed.

that is devastating. i'm terribly sorry for you.

Hopefully I can replace them all from nice copies at work. It's terrible to lose books.

I work at Half Price Books. It's not too bad for a corporation run by hippies. ;)

New address please, Miss Thang? ; ) Have you tried wiping them with a cloth soaked in a bit of diluted bleach water? They may not be the same but perhaps you could salvage some of them?

I saved a couple that I may be able to save. But the rest were covered in thick fuzz and tendrils of doom deep inside. It spread terribly quickly. That's what I get for not reading my fun books during the semester.

New address and number forthcoming soon. :)

Just across the highway in Austin, to a more western neighborhood. It's near where I grew up, so I'm kinda fond of this part of town. (Even though I suppose it's technically suburbia)

My good roommate and I found a fabulous two bedroom place that's ever so nice.

If I can find any of them, I will certainly send you one. There were only a few, and that professor is writing a book on the use of obscenities in early twentieh century Russian lit this semester, so he growls when one approaches his door. But I'll look around!

Oh!!! Books in pain is such a heart-rending thing. It sounds so cliche to say thing like that, but whatthefuck. I hope you can at least replace them with pretty new copies.

Indeed. Not good.
I did find a copy of the Roman Fever collection today at work. So I will keep my eyes open and replenish my shelves. Though I don't know where I'm going to get that vampire book again. Damn it, I liked that one a lot.
