Sep. 13th, 2002 02:44 pmWatching a random movie, Prague Duet, just because I recognize the streets, the Skodas, the buildings, the bottles of Mattoni, the Jewish cemetary, the beer glasses, Tien Cathedral over the square... They're cooking, side by side, garlic in the pan, and it's such a lovely moment.
It makes me wish I was in Prague, and in love, and walking on the cobblestones.

Date: 2002-09-13 10:37 pm (UTC)The first time I went to the Czech Republic was through my University, UT-Austin. We had an exchange with Charles University in Prague. Some language classes, lots of cultural stuff. If you check the calender in my journal last summer from the end of May to beginning of July you'll find my stories from there. The Charles program was quite fun, we stayed in a dorm in a great location. It's a hell of a university, one of the oldest in the world.
This summer I went independently to Masaryk University in Brno, a city about three hours east of Prague. The program I did was an intensive language course, about five hours a day, six days a week. As far as language goes, it was superior. I felt challenged and learned a great deal in just four weeks. Plus, this program attracts lots of students from all over Europe and beyond. Again I stayed in a dorm, in a good location.
I love the Czech Republic. It's like walking into a fairy tale, it's unbearably beautiful. There's so much in the way of culture and life, the beer is the best, you can get everywhere with public transit, the language is lovely... oh yes, I'd like to go back. One day, I'd like to live there I suppose.
It can be lonely, doing something like that on your own. The advantage of doing an exchange through your university is that you'll have some people you know with a common background. But going alone can be good as well, in that it makes you deal more with others.
Go for a month, or a semester, do some traveling. It's one of the best things you can do for yourself. Prague changed my life last summer.
