we follow the Master

My mother, my sister and I went to see The Two Towers this afternoon, and it made me snicker to hear the English version of Taty's beautiful club land lesbian love song. I grumped about the incorrect translation and sat through far too many commercials before we even started seeing a number of dismal previews. This business of showing commercials before the movies sucks, in my opinion. (Though I really do want to know what on earth the name of the music in that Volvo commercial is...)

The only preview that looked remotely interesting was for a pirate movie. I kid you not. We all want to see Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom as pirates.

The movie, as ever, is intense and beautiful beyond compare. I'm so enamoured of the CG work on Gollum, and they certainly deserve an Oscar for that. There's so much death and darkness in this one. The tear of fearful awe that drips from Wormtongue is a nice touch, and I like watching the uruk-hai and the orcs argue over eating Merry and Pippin. The facial expressions of various characters are so into the reality of the moment.

The sky looks the same today as it did a year ago, when I was racing homewards from the first movie. Lines high, and it is hard to believe this isn't a matte painting.

Thank you and you for the wonderful Christmas cards. I will add them to the mantle with Joi's.

I love that Volvo ad, because it captures the darkness of the things that are important to children.

It is very, very odd. Reminds me of long car trips, at night, in the back of the suburban. That music, too.

Commercials in front of movies is stupid, agreed. I really hate those "i want yr bod" ads.

And what's this business about Taty singing in English, and how does it coincide with Lord of the Rings? I hope I'm misreading coherence. [And it doesn't really surprise me about the mis translation, though my best friend sings "polchaca bez lubovb" constantly.]

Gollem is my absolute favorite character.

Oh I hate those commercials too! They make me want to throw things at the television.

Know how when you're sitting in the theater waiting for the previews, and they're playing music and those Coke commercial slides and stuff? That's when I heard them. "Controversial Russian duo Taty and their song "All the Things She Said"..." I cracked up and started singing along in Russian, which earned me some weird looks. Heh.

I am tempted to get the English version album, cause they cover "How Soon is Now?" on it. Love love love the Smiths.

wow, The Smiths?! Ok I'll have to pick it up now. Huge Smiths fan here as well. My friend Marcus has a world show on the college radio station and he plays Taty a lot, actually, I'll have to mention this to him. That sounds really funny hearing them over a coke commercial. I wasn't paying much attention at either of my viewing of Lord of the Rings enough to hear, which I'm surprised the second group didn't catch it, seeing as it was a bunch of Russian students. Oh well.
