Fan-fucking-tastic day.

Melynda and I woke up to get our hair cuts. We are now beautiful short haired women, and it was an absolutely lovely day. Gorgeous weather. Lunch at La Madeline, potato gallette and strawberries romanoff, and then to Metro for cards and coffee. Now we're watching Gosford Park.

And I have had so many damn good moments of conversation today.

No, would love to study Czech, but I don't. She guest-lectured in my intro to Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies course and I've attended a few events she's organized, and I think she seems like an excellent teacher, although I'm sure she has no idea who I am. :) One of my colleagues in CREEES is a student of hers, though, and so is another woman I've befriended in Slavic.

Have you studied with her?

Ahh. I was speaking with her recently and she mentioned a student she knew who was studying Romani and I thought it might be you.

Professor Pichova was one of the biggest influences on my life in the past three years, both in academia and in my personal life. She is a great professor and a good friend of mine. If you ever have the chance to take one of her courses, go for it.

The person she's referring to is a new friend of mine! :) I'd love to study with Pichova; we'll see if it can work into the next year. I'm trying to get a sense of whether I'm going the Anthro or Soc direction right now, so I'm a little afraid of deviating to do literature, as much as I'd enjoy it. And I imagine that not being a Czech speaker, that's pretty much what I'd have available to me in the way of Pichova classes and/or independent study. That said, though, it's mainly her influence that has made me quite mad to get a hold of a copy of Too Loud A Solitude and other Hrabal.

I also attended a portion of the fall conference on Kundera's reception internationally, and found that quite interesting.

Ahhh Hrabal. She saved my life with Hrabal. Gave me a copy of I served the King of England and sent me home to read, and it really did work. She really just is an amazing teacher.
