In a week, I'll be in New York. I'm going mad with the waiting, now that it is so close. I have a million things to straighten out before then, like buying mexican vanilla and figuring out if I want to take my laptop, or just cram everything in a carry on bag which really seems like the best option because dragging a suitcase anywhere is not fun.

I have an appointment to speak with the professor in charge of graduate studies in the Slavic department at Columbia next Friday. The building is up by Broadway and 114th, and it's lovely. Can't wait, can't wait. I rambled to myself in Czech all the way home tonight.

How did you pluck up the courage to ask for a week off so soon after starting your job?

I told them I wouldn't take the job unless they were cool with me going to New York for the first week of May. ;)

Yay!

Man, NY in the spring. How lovely. I hope you guys have a great time. I'm so jealous.

Best of luck with the Columbia thing, of course all the crossable bits will be crossed ;)

Hey, good luck!! Have a great time in New York.

And I hope they're lovely to you at Columbia. If for some reason the person you meet happens to be awful, don't be discouraged, and find someone else. I met a few people at the Harriman Institute when I was thinking about Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies programs, and left almost in tears after my first encounter there. The guy was mean, discouraging, and completely uninterested. And then I met Catharine Theimer Nepomnyashchy (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/slavic/deptinfo/faculty/nepomn.htm) and wanted to go to Columbia immediately. She's very accessible and seems very interested in students. (Funding ultimately kept me away from that program there.)

Anyway, I hope it goes just great for you!

Thank you. I'm looking forward to wandering around the halls of academia and pretending it's where I live. ;)
