There are days where reading the news is akin to running a gauntlet down into the underworld. People killing their children in home exorcism rituals, people setting goats on fire, AIDS, Iraq, terrorism, the unending nightmare of Israel and Palestine, all of the awful things we see. Even reading about politics can be frustrating more often than not.

In an effort to comabt all this for a brief moment, I present my favorite happy news story of the day. Too bad they will put it on display, because you could have a giant dinner with this fish.

Texas Man Catches 121lb Catfish

Isn't it? Giant fat catfish! It reminds me of those prehistoric fish they sometimes catch down near Australia.

Shades of Big Fish come to mind . . . deary.

But the little kid breaking her back in the midst of an exorcism gone awry is just . . . too . . .it's just too something.

Enormous! My grandfather could tell good fish stories.

Yeah, the home exorcism story is haunting. That poor child. I did a double take when I saw the story.

I think that fish has mutated. Maybe some cool toxins in the water helped it out :-P

There was a study recently outside of Dallas that showed the fish in the area had elevated levels of Prozac due to ineffective wastewater treatments. :P

Sure that thing wasn't a baby Coelacanth?

That was kind of my thought too when I saw that picture.

totally unrelated...

...but I got my evaluations back today, and, sadly, there was an absolute dearth of anything remotely interesting in the comments sections. I had more "enjoyed the class" than I'd like to see, but no eviscerations, let alone odd and filigreed stream-of-consciousness essays. Maybe this term...

Aww that's too bad. Well hopefully this semester you'll have at least one kooky person who will write something interesting.

Here are some other massive catfish, caught via noodling:

Ooo. I've not ever seen pictures of the Mekong catfish, though I've read about them. Yay giant fish!

My mom's boss goes scuba diving in Lake Travis, and claims to have seen some pretty large fish down there. Nothing quite like the Mekong fish though.

Damn. Did they catch it with a truck winch?

The article didn't say what kind of line he was using, but that he did have help from his buddy pulling it in.
