I checked the ebay auction -- it closed at $280. I really would like to know something about the motivation of the buyer, and I can't imagine that none of the owners ever thought to consult a rabbi -- one who is skilled would at least listen well, even if he/she didn't know what to do or believe in dybbyks.

I hope it goes to someone who can put it to rest. I've read enough Russian Jewish folktales to know that you don't want a dybbyk in the house. It is very weird that no one talked to a rabbi.

My husband wants to make a short story now out of how the dybbyk and the priest got into the box.

I was thinking the same thing, that it would be a great short story, except that even thinking aobut it feels creepy.

A person imagines that the grandmother's acquisition of the box had something to do with her ability to stay alive, and that her part of the bargain was to keep the box.

I'm inclined to send my rabbi an e-mail about this story.

Do email your rabbi! Let me know what he says. Send him a copy of the picture of the box, especially the back. I really want to know what that Hebrew inscription says. A knowledgeable opinion is sorely needed here.

I did some poking around, and sure enough, he's the guy who bought it the first time it was posted. It's gotta be a pretty nasty thing.
