There was an interesting piece on the local news tonight about hip surgery for dogs who have severe dysplasia. This is a condition where the joints do not develop properly, and frequently leads to arthritis and lameness. It's most common in hips, and is a genetic condition that affects mostly larger breed dogs. Scanning through articles, it seems they've yet to discover which gene and why it affects some breeds more than others. More info can be found at here.

Anyhow, it's fascinating to see the doctors developing titanium joints and replacing the injured hip. These dogs that might have been crippled can now move normally.

One of my mother's cats has an artificial hip joint, because his leg was broken when he was a kitten. The ball part of the leg bone was snapped clean off, so the vets replaced it. You would never know.

Weekends are never long enough. I feel like I'm just beginning to relax.

Given the enormous rip I've torn into my jeans, I broke down and bought a new pair. Along with a simple shirt that was on sale. Trying very hard not to feel guilty about spending, but I couldn't go to work with a gaping hole running across the thigh of my pants.

We've been cooking a lot today. Alan made a roast, and twice baked potatoes. I am finishing up a potato salmon casserole. It smells good. We've eaten very well.

At least I've finally finished Anna's background for the email game. Woo. Small victories.

Hip Displasure

My mother, my little sister and I went for a wonderful walk around a local lake (well, a pond, really) in downtown Vancouver... Lots and lots of dogs off-leash bouncing and barking and playing in the sunshine.

On our second turn around the lake,we came across an ancient bulldog/mastiff cross with some pretty advanced displasure. It saddened me for a bit. When I was little, we had a St. Bernard for a pet. Maggie was wonderful, but as one of the types susceptible to it, she developed displasure herself, and when it came time to hve her put down, I'm told it was something of a mercy ot her. The pain was just too great and she ached constantly.

I mentioned a little of this to my bio-fam, and my mother wondered if there was any type of surgery available. I shrugged and told her I didn't know. That was nearly twenty years ago when we had Maggie.

Your timeliness on this rather amazes me.

Thank-you.

The link above is to a site with tons more links, including many about treatment. I know from our German Shepard Magic that he was able to live the last few years of his life in comfort thanks to steriod treatments. The surgery was pretty amazing to see on the news tonight, and was coincidentally on a three year old St Bernard. She recovered well, after the surgery and a two month period of limited activity and rest.

Glad to be helpful. :)
