After careful consideration, I moved my wisdom tooth appointment from Monday to tomorrow morning. This way I have less time to panic. We ran by the store this afternoon for soup, fruit, and rum. The rum is mostly for me tonight, so as to quell any panic. Thankfully Alan was able to take the day off as well, so he will drive me to and fro and make sure I don't fall down.
I don't care what the dentist thinks. He's a bastard anyhow. Let's just pray the valium works.

Sure made post-wisdom tooth removal recovery fun.
(Seriously, though, I got really lucky and had a *great* oral surgeon for the removal. I was eating solid food again within two days. I hope it goes as smoothly for you as it did for me.)

Date: 2004-04-28 04:43 pm (UTC)About Post-Op
Date: 2004-04-28 04:14 pm (UTC)Very important:
DO take it easy
DO drink plenty of fluids
DON'T drink too much alcohol
DON'T use a straw, or smoke!
DON'T rush into eating solid foods too quickly, especially things like tortilla chips.
Most important part of healing is not to dislodge the blood clots that will form where your teeth used to be. You don't want "dry socket". If you think the pain you have now is bad, it can be worse afterwards if you don't take precautions. I am thankful that I followed my doctors advice. My roommate was not so lucky. She smoke and drank heavily as usual after her surgery, and consequentially wound up with incredible pain, not once, but twice!
Increased fluid intake and alcohol limitation helps keep the tissues hydrated during the healing process. Using a straw or rinsing too soon can dislodge the clot and promote bleeding. I've known someone who did the same thing eating a tortilla chip.
I had enough anesthetic during my surgery I was fine until the next morning, popped a couple of pain meds and felt fine by the second evening. I think you will do fine, I will be thinking of you!
Then see if Dr. Charles Elizondo is on your dental plan. He's a pussycat and his dental hygienist, Deanna, is great. He's been my dentist for seven years.
Re: About Post-Op
Date: 2004-04-28 04:46 pm (UTC)Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping I'll be too grumpy to think about wanting a cigarette. The alcohol is to take the edge off tonight, because I'm so nervous. :)
We bought sorbet, lots of gatorade, fruit and soup stuff. Soft food all the way. How I will miss the tortilla chips! You'll have to eat some for me this weekend.
In British Columbia

The best advice I heard was to go in for an appointmnet to just talk. Maybe you don't even open your mouth, just talk about your concerns, your fears, look at the equipment, look at x-rays and models and the options for pain management.
So some people are being sensible about it.
I hope your work goes well and quickly.
Ekatarina, who needs three fillings this summer. Sigh.

The fact that our medical industry is a for profit one disgusts me. You cand see how the doctor is planning out his new home or car when he's adding up your procedures sometimes.
Thank you for the well wishes.
