After many years, I have finally discovered the name of the delicious mushrooms I sometimes encounter in Chinese restaraunts. Straw mushrooms! We found a can of them in HEB last week, and Alan is using them in his version of pho tonight. The apartment smells like cilantro, onion and beef. It's nice.

I ate everything but the crusts of my english muffin. So hungry, because I've spent the day watching Iron Chef battles on the Food Network. This weekend has been wonderful, even though I've been recovering from the dental work. Not really looking forward to going back to work tomorrow, but it has been wonderful to just relax.

Cate and I traded white trash relative stories, and it was good to hear her laugh.

Oh my, I have a giant steaming bowl of Alan Pho before me. Time to eat.

Hit up Fiesta for canned mushrooms--they have not only straw, but oyster and abalone mushrooms as well. . . and baby corn, bamboo shoot slices, cha'i pow yu, assorted Oriental sauces, etc. etc. The Oriental section of the international foods is hugely useful, even if not as good as the one on Chimney Rock in Houston (the "Little Vietnam" one).

Straw mushrooms don't count as mushrooms. They count as delectable treats of the orgasm-inducing variety.

I love the straw mushrooms! I first had them a couple years ago, when my friend Eric traded home cooked Chinese meals for rides to work. He once made pork with lotus root and mushrooms, and it was super fantastic.
