the exactly as it should be wedding

Despite the inauspicious start, Saturday was an interesting day.
Alan is very ill, and had to stay at home. So I drove with my mother down to Houston, all along 290 and the stupid tollway to the hotel. There's something galling about paying taxes to get roads built and then being charged to drive on them.
So, the hotel was very large and had hard shiny floors. There was a massive girls soccer tournament in town, so the hotel was full of kids in shorts running around with discmans on and pony tails.
We drove to the church, more tollway and 290, and found my cousin running around in her crinkly petticoats. Ashley had exactly the kind of wedding dress I imagined she would, a big ball gown with a long train and lots of beading, sleeves with ribbons. If I get a picture I will post it later. But I think I could picked this dress when she was eight and said with certainty what she would wear today. She also wore my aunt's veil, this cathedral length, layered pieced of wispy fabric. Looking at my cousin, she was exactly that image of a bride Hollywood tries so hard to sell. Her entire wedding actually was straight out of some romantic comedy, which was kinda of funny. Only my cousin could actually pull something like that off.
She was very beautiful. Both her and Eric's knees were shaking up there in the church and I wondered if they would fall over.
My grandfather walked her down the aisle, and when he started to cry the rest of my family dissolved into tears. Myself included.
True to my cousin, all her bridesmaids wore purple. Four of them were pregnant, which must have cause all kinds of trouble finding a dress to fit all these girls in different stages. It was kinda funny.
Poor Ashley, in a big poufy dress in June. She was miserably hot.
There was a big reception back at the hotel, with an ice sculpture and lots of snacks and champagne. The dinner had a rather odd assortment of food, from the roast meats to eggrolls to pasta to quesadillas. Go figure. I amused myself filching glasses of champagne from other tables and empty seats while people danced. My grandfather danced, which was a momentous event.
It was very lonely without my husband.
I talked a lot with Tricia and Barney. They're moving to Tucson soon. My cousin Rob has grown so tall, and so very like his dad. I wish I could have seen more of them. Barney had threatened to rent a giant plasma screen television and put it in the church so we could watch the race and then have the wedding.
Smarty Jones lost, and I am very sad about that.
Driving to and from Houston in one day sucks. It sucks hard. I almost ran over a possum on the way home, and for the next two hours I was paranoid about hitting an animal or wrecking my mother's car.
