As with many things, I like to believe in the ideal of the Olympics. While I know many Olympic athletes get fabulous endorsement deals and publicity junkets, there are more who don't get them. There are a lot of people in it for the joy of it, or so I hope. You see it in their faces sometimes, like the Mariel Zagunis who won America's first gold in fencing in 100 years or the team cheering Natalie Coughlin to the finish of a record swim or Paul Hamm coming from a disasterous vault putting him in 12th to a near perfect vault that won him a gold medal. That expression was priceless.
Funny that I can be idealistic about things anymore. Even when I was younger, I was cynical as hell about anything and everything. Still, there have always been these moments where I want so badly to believe in the better parts of humanity.
The blueberry cakes didn't hold their shape so well. I think the blueberries compromised the structural integrity. I made a trifle out of it with the remain blueberries. The cinnamon nutmeg cakes come out much more solid. I glazed them, and all my cakes are resting now.
