Today I went to the grocery store after work to pick up cat food and things make dinner. It's a busy parking lot, and I saw a man waiting to cross the road in front of the store. Feeling unusually polite and generous, I stopped my car and waved at him to go ahead.

The guy gave me this look, as if to say "Oh you're going to make me cross the street now? Fine, whatever I'll cross the street." He didn't look at me, and most importantly he did not wave back.

In Texas, the wave is quite important. You have all sorts of waves to indicate greetings, friendly passerby, or waves to communicate with people in traffic. You wave to let someone in or when someone lets you over a lane. It's traditional, and more importantly it is good manners. Not waving means you're a jackass, and/or a recent transplant from those forsaken lands in California or the Northeast.

My supervisor had to leave work yesterday because his kid got a pebble shoved way down into his ear and they had to take him to the hospital. Today, everyone went real quiet and many people left after one of the supervisors announced someone died. It wasn't anyone I knew, as he had left Flood last year because of a serious illness.

My pants and shirt arrived in the mail today. The shirt is so fabulous, as are the pants. They are way to tight where they crop at the calves, and I think I'll have to enlist Cate's help letting them out a pleat so they fit. All in all, they are quite nicely made and I most highly recommend The Medieval Market for your Rennaisance costume needs.

We're watching the first A&M game of the season against Utah right now, and I'm so looking forward to the weekend.

The wave in traffic has always been a big thing for me. Ever since I was a kid, I remember seeing my father wave after someone let him pass on the highway. I get grouchy when people don't wave and always try to do so myself.
It's just one of those things that keeps us alive and interacting as humans, not giant metal automotons.

The wave is a cultural institution we must preserve at all costs!

Heyyyyyyy, I just found you on razorarts friends page. When you say "Flood", are you speaking of Flood Data (FAFDS)? I once worked there.

Indeed I am speaking of First American Flood Dataing Service, er, Flood Data Services. Were you on the research floor?

I was the third female researcher they'd ever had. I did South Carolina all by myself. I'm super old school.

I wonder who's still working there! (after 8 years). Is Chris Murphy still there?

PLEASE tell him Chris that "Justine says Hi" if you pass him in the hall.

Yes, we were in the dark ages back then. I was employee 1328.

How many do they want you to do in an hour now? Used to be (before all the segment research) that all the "curlies" were super easy and you only had to do 4 an hour. Then things became slightly psychotic and the curlies were really hard and if you ACTUALLY tried to do research instead of sorta guessing, you'd never make the quota of 8 an hour. I moved to the nightshift. More fun on the nightshift (even though it kills your social life).

It's more than amusing! It's balls out bizarre!

Sure thing, I'll wander around upstairs later on today.

Such a low number! I am 2933. Most of the India contract labor is in the 3000s.

I'm told the quota is at minimum 33 a day, probably more like 40 for one to escape the wrath. So about 5 an hour? I'm averaging 8 right now, but then I've got a lot on online resources to pull in NY. They've even started scanning in the FEMA maps so one hardly even has to get up.

I miss night shift sometimes.

What a dick! I get so mad when people don't wave up here. It's practically a law in Texas!

You know, I bet I could win a local campaign with a platform demanding we make that into a law. ;)

I am always shocked by the number of non wavers. I'm from NH, and let me tell you, you wave up there. It's just polite. Yet since I've been here I've had more people give me that look, or even the "fine I guess I'll merge ahead of you, if I must" look.

Bah. Stupid

It's good to know the wave exists in other states!
