journalism

The Pulitzers were handed out yesterday. Go hug your favorite freedom fighter journalist today, or take the time to read a newspaper & write a letter to them about something in there. The news media is an important part of our lives. Be aware of the world around you.

I went to the Newseum in D.C. in 1998. It's a very cool place. I think they are getting ready to move into a bigger building. They have so much stuff, from a Gutenberg Bible to an exhibit of Pulitzer Prize winning photos. Few museums have moved me to tears like this one. It was amazing to see the history of journalism, to learn about its pioneers and to see the results. Outside they have a memorial wall made of glass panes in a spiral of metal poles, with the names of all journalists killed in the line of duty. Somewhere I have some beautiful photos.

The one in poetry went to a professor from Stockton, the college about twenty minutes from here. (The "too good for Atlantic Cape Community College, but not good enough out of state" college seems to be the consensus.) Stephen Dunn. (Article here (http://www.pressplus.com/lifestyle//987482506.html).) Being woefully ignorant of contemporary poets that don't publish in the prestigious State of unBeing (http://www.apoculpro.org/sob/index.shtml), I'm not familiar with his work. But I'm familiar with his state. ;)

The Press of Atlantic City says:

Stephen E. Dunn, a professor at Stockton College since 1974 and southern New Jersey's unofficial poet laureate, received the Pulitzer for his book "Different Hours." The 121-page collection includes several poems about life in southern New Jersey and is Dunn's 11th published volume of poetry.

I haven't read him either. Maybe I will. Poetry is so personal, so unique I have trouble reading it sometimes. I'm addicted to narrative I suppose.

I have a lot of trouble with poetry. I think my head gets in the way; I have trouble telling what's supposed to be good and what isn't. I have an easier time with prose poems and translations. In English, I like prose...
