Bless our leaders, and all our delightful, hysterical neighbors who make us afraid. Let's give up all our rights so we can be safe!
I dislike the comparison of modern America to Nazi Germany because I think it's so broad and sweeping as to be overstated. But I wonder more and more if there were people in Germany who watched the rise of the Nazi party, the policies of their government and felt the same dread that I feel some nights.
Some days it takes all my self control not to hit people. Hard. In the face.

Date: 2004-12-01 12:13 am (UTC)I agree on the comparisons to the Nazis. We have our own, home-grown, modern, original, efficient, low-key, good-old-fashioned, friendly, American version of reckless state power here. Fascism, like everything else, has to adapt and change with the times, I suppose.
I try to remember that no one woke up in Germany one day and said, "Mien gotten leiben! Hitler just took over the country, implemented an authoritarian regime, killed all the Jews, and invaded most of Europe!" It took years of maneuvering before Jews were lining up at the entrances to gas chambers.
