ice hell

I left work at 6:30pm, worrying about the freezing rain and ice. I spent nearly two hours trying to get home. for at least an hour of that, I was stuck, not moving, on 183 looking at the Ohlen exit sign. Apparently there was a massive accident involving a semi that shut down both north and southbound traffic. My car was running for a solid two hours and had a quarter inch of ice crusted on the hood. I only skidded badly once, crossing to 360 southbound. I had to throw ont he parking brake and kill the engine to avoid smacking into a truck.

At one point while I waited, I got out of my car to smoke. The rain froze on my glasses. I shared my last cigarette with another stranded motorist. Law enforcement was slowly directing people to drive down the access road the wrong way to get off the freeway. We cheered when it was our turn. On the way home I saw police closing ramps, and out on foot helping people try to get off the overpasses where they were stranded. I saw at least four accidents.

My father's foreman was in a horrible accident on 290 earlier this morning. A guy on the opposite side of the road lost control and careened across into oncoming traffic. He struck Frank dead on, and died in the crash. Frank has head and neck injuries, two broken arms, a broken leg and multiple internal injuries. It took rescue workers an hour to cut Frank out of his car. My father spent the day at the hospital. At one point Frank's blood presure dropped to 20 due to massive blood loss. He survived surgery. My father would be grateful for your thoughts and prayers for Frank tonight. He's taking this very hard, as Frank left the office to visit a job site only minutes before the accident.

Wow! I am sorry to hear about your Dad's friend, but glad to hear you made it home ok if not a little frozen.

Got up early this morning to get the weather report. When the weather man said that his car did a skid out on his way to the station, I was on the phone calling out of work. I have skidded out on ice and crashed before, and it is not an experience worth repeating.

Sending good thoughts your dad's friends way.

Was that the accident with the Black Saab on 360? I remember that.

No driving for me! No driving for anyone!

Yup, that was the one. Scary shit.

I called out today, too, because I couldn't even get out of my parking lot without almost skidding into everything. They were cool about it, though.
