godspeed Ann Richards

Ann Richards died last night, at home in Austin. Odds are that even if you don't come from the great country of Texas, you would recognize her big white hair and smile. Ann Richards did a lot of good work in the decades she served Texas, and the world is a dimmer place without her.

From the Associated Press report:

Richards said she never missed being in public office. She grinned when asked what she might have done differently had she known she would be a one-term governor.

"Oh," she said, "I would probably have raised more hell."

I loved politics from the time I was very very young, long before Ann Richards became a national star, but she was my first political hero.

She was the first politician I really paid attention to, and I am glad that her work reached so far out there into the world.

Damn, my mom and I were just talking about her the other day.
She was a great lady.

I don't know enough to know if I agreed with her politics, but you gotta love her.

I think she stole it from somewhere, but she was one of the people who said "Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in high heels." I love that. :)
