I have a writing exercise that needs doing, waiting there in my inbox like a sad puppy. It wants to be written. Kicking myself into getting it done is the hardest part though. But it is letter writing, which is something I truly love to do. I've been thinking today that I should chop up my winter discontent and make it into something useful. The song on the radio, the book I hadn't opened since high school, the strange dreams that wake me up in the morning, all of it should melt together into the beginning of something else entirely. I'd like to write an apocalyptic novel that is not preachy or a future action star film vehicle. I'd like to write about the end of the world but I haven't decided how.

[Poll #917365]

Tell me, livejournal land, what you're going to do when the world ends. Do you think about this? Do you worry about it? Do you laugh about it? Does apocalyptic art set you on fire or chill your heart? What would you do, what would you say? How do you imagine the world will end? Talk to me.

Have you ever seen the film " Last Night " ? The world ends quite simply in that one.

Also, a fun read on the subject is the CNN ' end of the world ' video that is stored in a vault for just the moment.

This is what Ted Turner has planned, according to Mitchell Fink of NYDaily News:

"…Turner, it seems, has been a doom-and-gloom kind of guy from the very day in June 1980 when he launched the cable network. He said then, as only he could, "We gonna go on air June 1, and we gonna stay on until the end of the world. When that time comes, we'll cover it,play 'Nearer, My God, to Thee,' and sign off.

"Ten years later, I'm told, Turner used CNN production facilities to create what he called his "end-of-the-world" video. Sources tell me it consists of a recording of "Nearer, My God," over footage of a waving American flag. Turner is said to have ordered the tape locked away until it was determined that the world was about to end.

Generally speaking, I take "end of the world" to mean "collapse of American civilization", or some equivalent thereof. (As opposed to a meteor smacking into us (could happen), or the 80s' lietmotif, nuclear war (somewhat less likely these days.)

I've thought about it a great deal over the years (postapocolyptic movies have always been a favorite); there have been times when I've had to divorce myself entirely from following the news, because I was having panic attacks about it (although I usually try to make a Dr. Strangelove type joke, if discussing it publicly.)

If shit does hit fan, I think it'll either be some sort of airborne pandemic, or else a slow, grinding economic collapse brought on by far too many ongoing wars. In case A, I'd remove myself from society and set up camp in the woods; if B went far enough along, I might well do the same.

Wow, I'm disjointed as all hell today.

Technically, I suspect that, should the world end in some meaningful sense, my lifetime would come to an end shortly before the fact. Thus, the end of the world would not come in my lifetime.

But, such technicalities aside, I still expect my end to come a long time before the world's, more's the pity.

Speaking of the end.

I will welcome the end of the world- one step closer to getting to God. I am leaning towards the two scenarios Coyotegoth provided overall. But I will leave how it ends up to God even though man is doing a good job of getting us there.

End of the world...as we know it

I voted "yes" because I believe that the world as it stands now will end in our lifetime. I have always had this "lack of resources" mentality; in other words, I often grocery shop thinking, what if there were no grocery stores? Would I know how to find food? How would I survive? Would there be fresh water? Would chaos reign ala Lord of the Flies and would I be able to defend my family?

Now, this is either:
1. Because I am a diagnosed Depressive; or
2. A psychic vision; or
3. I grew up poor with a lack of resources and this stays in my psyche and in my perception of the world.

Who knows? I hope it doesn't end in a negative way, but the end of the world as we know it could mean positive change. You know...cleansing through fire and that sort of thing.

As much as mankind is doing his/her best to destroy this earth, I think it more likely that a natural catastrophe is going to take us out. That's what's done it to several species down through the ages, and the best predictor of the future is the past.

I think things will change, maybe drastically, but I don't think the world will end- by which I mean that all humans will be killed in some disaster. Maybe we'll have a nuclear exchange or a horrible pandemic or economic collapse, but I bet enough humans would survive to carry on the species. That isn't to say things might not suck a lot. Eric has a book that has all sorts of tips to surviving societal collapse- pigeon recipes and the like. And of course there's the guns.

We've actually thought about building a house in the hill country somewhere and trying to get off the grid. I know I'd have to get a lot less sqeamish about parting out animals, because I don't think it would be practical to be a vegetarian. But who knows.

I seem to remember that Austin was a primary target for nukes if it came to that. It would probably be better to get vaporized in that scenario. I hope I'm having sex when it happens.
