I made myself go to the store at 8:30am, which means it is not so crowded and the air isn't boiling yet. I bought stuff to make 7-Up pound cake and a coconut cake, including two coconuts. Of course I was restrained in the store and didn't buy any snacks. Now all I can think about is ice cream. Specifically, cookies and cream ice cream.

(Totoro cupcakes, aww)

Texas Monthly often features some beautiful photography spreads. The September issue has a feature on the state queens, from the Gator Queen to the Citrus Queen to the Poteet Strawberry Queen to the Queen of the tunas (which are a cactus). Texas has a wonderful variety of festivals. We need a Kolache Queen though.

Re-reading The Red Tree, and it remains subtle and scary. Don't let the wacky cover throw you - it is so not representative of the novel.

Last night I watched a superbly creepy documentary on the BBCA about a handful of people and their Real Dolls. The guys who had relationships with their dolls were far less creepy than the one guy who had eight and kept them stuffed in his garage haphazardly.

That Real Doll doc is riveting, isn't it? My workstudies and my sister and I all watched it on a slow day and talked about it for weeks. I was fine until I saw the repair guy pulling out little damaged bits of doll vagina. Then I got creeped out.

Completely compelling - the part that got me was Mr. Eight Dolls cleaning his with a dish scrubbing brush. Ewwwww.

I'm going to see if the Library has The Red Tree today!

Dammit, they don't have it yet. What other book of hers do you recommend b/c they have all except that one and I haven't read any others, besides Silk, which I totally loved.

Murder of Angels picks up in territory left after Silk, so that might be a good one to get next. Threshold is probably my favorite of her novels. I am also intensely fond of her recent short story collection, A is For Alien.

yup, Murder of Angels is the one I chose, so I'm glad to read your comment :)

What is up with the covers of all these urban fantasy books?! It's painful at times to get past the horror to read what's inside.

Is The Red Tree part of a series, or is it a stand-alone deal? I'm trying to start George RR Martin's Game of Thrones series, but I'm still on my witches/ghosts/vampires/pixies kick, it seems.

I don't know, but it is a publishing trend I wish would go away. There's a really cool alternative cover someone designed for her up on her website.

The Red Tree is a stand alone piece.
