LOTR feast. candy, sanity

The annual Lord of the Rings feast is not happening at its usual weekend in November. It happens to fall on a day in December when Mike will be out of town, pursuing a dream of seeing Rammstein play a live show at Madison Square Garden. I have no idea why they moved the feast to December this year, but I am conflicted and unhappy about this arrangement. I don't know if I will end up going or not. Damn it.

I made Snickers. These are for us. Any trick-or-treaters will just have to eat boring mass produced candy since you can't give kids homemade things. I don't think I got the consistency right with my nougat and my caramel came out hard as rocks and prone to shattering. (How did I accidentally make brittle?) It seems better after some time in the fridge. But it is done and hopefully it tastes good. I wasted money buying peanut butter when I already had peanut butter, but other things I neglected to buy are expired. So much grocery fail today!

The Rally to Restore Sanity is tomorrow. I think restoring sanity is a good thing. Sadly I am working in the morning so I'll have to content myself with watching it streaming.

Mike is going with James to a haunted house this evening. I am not a fan of haunted houses. I don't like people leaping at me, shrieking or throwing things at me. I read about some haunted house recently where they just shut you in a room with a flash light and you have to find your way out of the building on your own. Terrifying.

I think I hurt my knee this morning while exercising. Hopefully it is just a temporary thing. My rage during the finale of Project Runway caused me to be more vigorous than necessary. Instead of wandering around in the dark being terrorized I think I'll soak my feet and play video games.

Man, someday I hope to be in Austin for LoTR goodness. (And yeah- haunted houses are right about on the same plane as roller coasters for me. I can survive them, but what's the point?)

Normally they are in November, right after Thanksgiving. I don't know what's up with this December thing. Argh.

Since when the hell can't you give kids homemade things?

The best part of halloween is the popcorn ball.

Growing up here, if we ever got anything in our treat bags that was homemade we were made to throw it out. The paranoia about drugs/poison/razors is so intense and ridiculous even though it never happened!

I guess that's the benefit of living in a small town. We knew most of the people.

Now I want a freaking popcorn ball. Mmmm, carmel popcorn ball...

The LOTR thing sounds awesome. It's the sort of thing my roommates and I might go to. It's also the sort of thing we might try to recreate at home -- we like making elaborate feasts.

I did this two years ago, drawing partially from Alamo's previous menu for the LotR feast, where they did each course based on one of the races rather than on the hobbit meal cycle.

I really should finish... er, start AND finish... my photo and recipe post about that, huh? I'll add it to the list of posts I owe my knitting blog.

If you remember, I was afraid I'd added the wrong amount of powdered sugar to the nougat part. I had to knead it to get it to come together. I slowly bumped up the heat on the caramel from low to 4 (medium comes after 5) until it was runny enough to incorporate the peanuts. The only way I can think of brittle happening is if you boiled it, and that's the kind of thing you'd have noticed at the time. :P

Project Runway disappointed me, too. I thought for sure Mondo would win, even though I liked Andy's collection best (because, shiny!). I remember an earlier season when the crazy LA designer with all the zippers won, and that the woman from NY who does couture evening gowns and the man from Israel who did gorgeous draping both lost. I thought "judges like crazy" was the paradigm.
