it's sunday and the sky is cloudy
May. 23rd, 2004 11:11 amReason number 8,743 why I love Texas: because when eating in small diners there is always salsa on the table as a condiment. Today is was rather good fresh salsa at Austin Diner, to go with my eggs scrambled with bacon and cheese. Excellent biscuits and homefries better than anything else I've had in town. It's a cute little place with a whole shelf of vintage mixers and other kitchen appliances up in back.
Since when did being a hipster mean you had to get a really bad haircut? Or was it always like that? I counted at least a half dozen girls in the same dorky black plastic glasses with awful hair. Sadly, they could have been rather cute with better hair. Furthermore, I will never understand people who wear sweatshirts or sweaters and then put on miniskirts or shorts with flip flops. That just does not make any sense, nor does it look good.
Dragon's Lair wasn't open yet or we would have wandered around in the land of geeks for a bit. I forget how quiet things are on Sunday mornings. On the drive home, we saw some of the striking Southwestern Bell workers, and I cheered. More than 100,000 people walked off the job, striking for better wages and health care. Rock the hell on, I say. SWBell is an evil company. I quit having a telephone not because I like cell phones, but because the phone company is crap.
We also passed a massive crime scene on Lamar, at one of those shady, run down motels near Threadgills and the Yellow Rose. The news was out there interviewing the police, and I saw several police cars. Yellow crime tape covered the entire front of the motel lot. Brutal, drug related murder, I would guess. Still waiting
Yesterday I saw the presidential helicopters cruising over Austin. One of the Bush girls graduated from UT this weekend. They were flying rather low, which puzzled me. Maybe they don't worry about people here shooting rockets at their helicopters.
A Softer World is the most brilliant webcomic out there. I found them through Warren Ellis, and he was right. Emily and Joey do neat stuff. Check out their spin on photos found in the press at News. They alternate between funny and wrenching.
While you are surfing the net, go check out Althea Soaps & Herbals for your soap needs. This stuff is so fantastic I don't think I'll ever buy soap in a store again. The Purple Flowers bar has such a rich, lush scent and is my favorite so far. Seriously good stuff and she even offers a sampler set of any three half bars for $5! So awesome and it has revived my love of soaps. Though I was sad when I finished the last of my lavender lime soap, I am very glad to have Althea's stuff. My skin is improving shower by shower.
