Despite the best efforts of IH-35, I made it to San Marcos today and spent some quality time with my favorite Texas girl. A delicious lunch in a little cafe, shopping at the Paper Bear, and many good stories. We pondered the mysteries of Fatal Attraction over my baked potato and her chicken. I liked the iced tea.
It is good to see Cate. We discussed the possibilities of mah-johngg, and her upcoming adventures in the desert, and my attempt to channel the spirit of Nabokov into my writing by living on oranges. We bought some candy, and now I'm thinking I really should have bought more. Especially these candy bars, with names like Sonate and Concerto. I found them in the Christmas aisle, and they're delicious. Perhaps I will hhave to go back down next week and steal Cate away from her office. She seems to know all the best places to eat.
Driving home was ridiculous. First, everyone was passing me at 80 miles an hour. Which is unnerving when the road and the sky are the same color, and keep blurring together. Then, at the edge of South Austin, everyone slowed to 20mph. Twenty miles per hour. For no reason at all, that I could tell. As I felt my temper flare, I remembered my new motto. I looked around and imagined transfiguring all the cars into slugs. Large, pink and purple slugs. The thought was so delightful I managed to chuckle most of the way home.
