It was stroke of luck that we happened upon that paticular train. It's an antigue engine and car, both about a hundred years old. They've restored them as close to the original as possible, and they run it every now and then down the track towards the Austrian border. I like trains, probably because I've read a few too many Russian novels and have overly romantic notions associated with traveling by train. Knowing I was in this old car, on these old tracks, gave me such a thrill. I spent most of the trip hanging off the edge of the car, watching the forest pass by.
No offense to you, but you guys look like the cast of a fall prime time show on network tv. Is there someone missing, or did you guys find somebody to take the picture for you guys?
Hahaha. God knows we could have been a television show with all the insanity going on that summer. I forget who took the picture, but it was someone else traveling along with us. There were a few more people along not pictured. Supporting cast you know. ;)
Wow, cool pic. I saw a huge old functioning steamer in Braunschweig, Germany, chugging out of the station once. It was huge and more beastlike than a modern electrical or diesel engine, but at the same time kind of romantic. It was like being in a movie. I fell in love with europe years ago on a summer trip like the one you went on here. I've visited several times since then, improving my german and making friends along the way. Unfortunately, I havent made an opportunity to live or study there yet. I often lose sight of those dreams. But reading your journal is inspirational, because you have made a dream reality. I hope you can make livejournal updates when you get there. Where will you be living, with a host family or at a college campus?
