This is the sort of morning I love. It's been raining since last night, everything is cool and wet with that pearlescent quality to the light. I'm reading a fantasy novel with academics, mysterious wizards and deadly swordsmen. The Kentucky Derby preshow is on television. I'm not in much pain. The only things that could make life better would be a cherry cola slurpee and puffy cheetos. I'd like to be able to chew again.

I love the Kentucky Derby, even when it rains. They are working on the track, to try and keep it from getting too sloppy. Tarps are up all over to protect the cameras and wires. I love to watch them stretch the horses' legs and clips of previous races. Should I ever become wealthy, I'm going to have racehorses, and buy big floppy hats to wear at the races. I don't really like bourbon though, so instead of mint juleps I will drink mojitos.

Usually race time is like 5 I think? Jan always used to have a Derby party, so it brings up a lot of weird shit for me, but I've loved it since I was a kid.

Sometime in the afternoon, yes. Which is good, as I plan to spend the rest of the day on the couch reading and being very lazy. Maybe trying to eat a donught.

My mum has a set of shot glasses from the Kentucky Derby. Something she got from her mother, I think. Something Jennifer and I will haggle over in some (hopefully) distant future.
When you're wealthy, I'll have to beg you do buy be a hat so I can go to the races with you. (I'm always inclined to picture My Fair Lady.)

A mojito is a drink with rum, lime, club soda and a sprig of mint. They are very tasty, and served on ice. You want the lighter rums, fresh lime juice, maybe even some mint syrup. They are good summertime drinks.

I think this is how you make a mint julep. You crush a big sprig of mint with a spoon of sugar in a glass with a little water. Then you fill the glass with ice and pour bourbon over it. Garnish with more mint.

I have to admit I have never actually had a mint julep. But I love mojitos.
