A gorgeous day outside, and a fairly calm one within. I love, love, love the small town law enforcement folks who call me. They're funny and they know everything. It makes those reports smooth.

I had a drink with Rachel at Metro. We rambled about various subjects and laughed at some just random outfit choices. I thought that girl was going to break her ankle swinging it across the pavement in those heels. It was truly amazing.

A rat wandering in a mechanical room at the University of Texas caused the electrical short that shut down power to the entire campus for nearly an hour Thursday night. -Statesman

That rat cost UT $70,000. Gah. I think the campus should adopt some cats.

At undergrad, the students were under strict orders not to interfere with the daily doings of the various feral cats about campus, nor were they to adopt them or shoo them away. I don't recall any problems due to mice or rats -- no plague, no rabies, no power outages. If I recall correctly, the people who worked at the Physical Plant left out saucers of milk and pieces of cheese every so often to keep the cats around and mousing.

Cats can't effectively hunt rats, which are too large a prey for the predator. Now terriers, they're fine ratters and were bred for the purpose. I think that a few Jack Russells would be in order.

Most of our rats are smaller than the behemoths that I saw in NYC. ;)

The more the merrier! A few pups inside, and a couple cats outdoors to patrol the perimeter... It would be fun.
