unsolicited advice, knowing your words

Dear reviewers, if you ever want anyone to take you seriously you need to get your funny words and sayings down correctly. Otherwise, people are just going to point and laugh. Here's a couple common mistakes you should avoid:

It's not "hammy down" it is hand me down. Good people might mistake your used car for a breakfast sandwich and that would just lead to unhappiness for everyone!

It's not "walla!" but "voila." (I'll even forgive you for leaving out the accent mark.)

When talking about scents, you want to say "reeked" instead of "wreaked" unless you opened that bottle of perfume and a Spartan sprang out to smash your chairs and rip up your carpets and skewered your lap dog on a spear.

I would buy that perfume.

...as a gag gift. For someone I don't like. BUT STILL.

Ahahahahaha. That would be an awesome gift. I should find some way to make this and then get Think Geek to sell it.

Also: Piqued, not peeked or even peaked.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooo yes. That is also a good one.

We should send a bottle of Eau de Sparta to the girlfriend of that dude in your guild who causes so much trouble. :P

Tempting! She's still hanging around our public channel (he hasn't logged in since he got hacked a month or so ago) and making "oh, I'm not allowed to talk to you guys or you'll get in trouble" noises. And she's now the guildmaster of a guild whose name features the words "sad panda" in it.

Bah. Eau de Spartan isn't good enough!

The misspelling of "voila" drives me bananas too.

"Viola!"

It's like someone's getting really excited about a musical instrument when that really isn't the case at all...

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahah yes. Oddly, I don't see that misspelling as much as I see the "wallah!" or "walla!" thing.

But it makes me think of excitable viola players. That should be a fic challenge.

RRRRRRRRRRRROFL.

I love your posts.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahah, thanks! You know you want a bottle of Eau de Sparta too. :D

[identity profile] bizetsy.livejournal.com 2010-07-28 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Walla, I am gonna try to send you some hammy downs soon.

[identity profile] alainn-sorcha.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hammy down." *snort* That's a new one.

My biggest pet peeves in this area are "intensive purposes" and "suppose to." ARGH! They make my eyes bleed.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Intensive Purposes sounds like a great band name. Hah!

*snort*

[identity profile] coyotegoth.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Somehow, this reminds me of: "It's not chopped ham- it's chopped steak!" :D

[identity profile] brienze.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
^--- That is all.

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. I think I see all of those on a regular basis in product reviews.

[identity profile] rachel2205.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
AGREED SO MUCH. Also, why do so many people write "congradulations"????

Anyhoo, I was wondering if, what with you joining the Good Ship Excolo, and having some mutual friends and interests if you would like to be friends. Don't worry if not - I won't, like, poison Arkady with an evil fish or something. ;)

[identity profile] tsarina.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people are crazy is the only explanation I have.

The Good Ship Excolo and it's catch of evil fish! :D Edit - yes and friends. Friends are good, even if they come with bearing evil fish.

Awesome! I have added you. BTW, mostly my journal at the moment is me stressing about moving to Paris, which I know makes me sound like an entitled twat! XD My excuse is that I was given seven weeks' notice and I only speak basic French, so my life is interesting right now. But I'm sure normalish LJ service will resume shortly.

Here's another gift from today's Ticketmaster batch- category 'favorite moment':

"There was no pacific moment, the whole show was excellent"

Can you hear the ocean wooshing in and out of this person's head? Hah!
