Feb. 16th, 2012 08:08 pmI do not have any fortitude to write about the current state of affairs in American politics with any grace or charity. Just looking at it makes me want to scream "fuck you and you and you and you" all over the place. Especially when it comes to the current attacks on the freedom of women to make their own medical decisions. I can't even talk about this in any rational way at the moment. I did manage to send strongly worded letters to various congressional reps, but that exhausted my ability to be rational and calm.
I want to inflict the agony of various medical conditions on the various men I've seen in the news today. Every single one of them should be fucking ashamed of their inhumanity.

Date: 2012-02-17 04:01 am (UTC)Maybe not, but probably similar. Ugh, I don't really want to discuss it either.
But I'm with you.

Date: 2012-02-17 04:39 am (UTC)Pissing off 50% of the voting population with all these birth control and fetal personhood shenanigans is a whole other ballpark, and they don't seem to realize it yet.

Date: 2012-02-18 03:18 am (UTC)Bar none. No exception.
I support a woman's right to birth control. I support a woman's right to decide to have an abortion. I support a woman's right to have a late term abortion (though I do ponder why anyone would perform/have these procedures for the exceptionally rare occasions they are not medically related...).
In short. I will always stand with women and defend their rights to do what they want to do. This is one of the few issues that I see no compromise on.
That said... I don't think that the government should force people who do not believe in birth control to pay for others to have it.
Similarly, I would not require a doctor to perform abortions to practice obstetrics.
Forcing people to do things they believe are wrong (even though we believe them to be right) puts us squarely in the camp of those who want to use the government to impose their beliefs on us.
Yes, all women should have access to birth control. And, it is our responsibility - yours and mine - to ensure they have that access. But, we must make that happen without using the government to force people to do things that violate their conscience.
We're better than that.

Date: 2012-02-18 04:01 pm (UTC)What about when the oral contraceptive prescription isn't for contraception at all? What about when it's a medical necessity with the side effect of also preventing pregnancy? Would you make my conservative employer cover my prescription with a doctor's note swearing to God it was medically necessary?
You support a woman's right to have access to the pill, but what about her ability to pay for it if it isn't covered by her insurance? This pill is cost prohibitive, sometimes even with insurance.
You have this opinion when it comes to birth control, but I highly doubt you'd be consistent if it were some white supremacist saying he didn't want to hire black people because his religion forbade mixing of the races. Sometimes what people believe is wrong and dangerous, and a lawmaking body has to step in for the greater good.
PS. All of your examples are specifically women's health related. What portion of your own healthcare are you prepared to sacrifice for the church?

Date: 2012-02-18 07:08 pm (UTC)I'm glad you have your own opinions, I really am. I'm sure you've thought about it a lot. But this was really not the place or the time.
This is not the first time you've done this either and I'm really quite fucking done with it.
