stupid names often indicate child abuse
Aug. 23rd, 2006 04:55 pmI just took a report on a family that named their child Drizzt. Yes, Drizzt as in Drizzt Do'Urden of the Forgotten Realms RPG and books. Seriously guys, this is so beyond wrong I don't know what to do. My coworker Stacy suggests their next child be named Anita Blake, Buffy, or Xena.

Date: 2006-08-24 07:59 am (UTC)I will never name my kid Harry. I have had more than enough children ask me if I am Harry Potter’s father when I was a substitute teacher… and one who thinks that kids should not be coddled I responded with, “If I was Harry Potter’s father I would be dead.”
I know it could be considered callous but kids need to know the reality of life.
Number Two, I agree to one half of “graphicnovelist” statement:
I vote for Raistlin!
Though not a great man, the metaphor of sacrifice for the ends would work well in light to the naming trend.

If I ever decided to leave my current occupation I may very well go into teaching; the only problem is deciding between special education where I seem to have a knack or high school where questions like yours start to become interesting debates.

Date: 2006-08-25 06:14 am (UTC)Over here it also involves a lot of 'crowd control' rather than actual 'education' - which could be why up to a third of British school leavers (at 16-18) are reckoned to be functionally illiterate! I don't think that many kids have "learning difficulties", well, not beyond they have never learned to sit down, be quiet & LISTEN for once anyhow! But it's many many years since I've had contact with Education - & that was when our two were in school.
