I just took a report on a family that named their child Drizzt. Yes, Drizzt as in Drizzt Do'Urden of the Forgotten Realms RPG and books. Seriously guys, this is so beyond wrong I don't know what to do. My coworker Stacy suggests their next child be named Anita Blake, Buffy, or Xena.

Bwahahahahahahah. Oh banged my head on my desk when I leaned over to catch my breath. Too funny.

It was so bad during the call. The caller was saying "This is a strange name, I've never heard it before." I just replied "I think it's a book character."

I'm naming my kid Tasselhoff!

Also, I just made the connection that Tasselhoff rhymes with "Hasselhoff"! There is great potential for comedy here.

I'm guessing that the caller had some other complaint in addition to the name, which is the saddest part.

If you're going to name a kid Drizzt, you should at least be otherwise good parents to compensate, or something.

You do realize that in about ten years every kindergarten class is going to have about 10 Harry's in it, right?

Oooooooooooo, can you imagine a classroom with five Harrys, two Dracos, and umpteen Blaises? Hah!

Well, the kid probably doesn't have a -2 to hit penalty when he's wielding two swords. Probably compensates a little.

And half the Blaises will be girls and half will be boys.

Harry Potter and Raistlin

Number One, I fear “rm‘s” comment even though I like the story:

I will never name my kid Harry. I have had more than enough children ask me if I am Harry Potter’s father when I was a substitute teacher… and one who thinks that kids should not be coddled I responded with, “If I was Harry Potter’s father I would be dead.”

I know it could be considered callous but kids need to know the reality of life.

Number Two, I agree to one half of “graphicnovelist” statement:

I vote for Raistlin!

Though not a great man, the metaphor of sacrifice for the ends would work well in light to the naming trend.

Looks like population density starts early, Mr Potter. I suppose, depending on the childrens' ages, you could have replied, "No, now go work out why, & I want an essay on it by tomorrow morning!"

Which might have earned you the soubriquet "Snape"!

Yes, you will have to be careful there. No Hermione Potters either. :P

If I started being referred to as Snape, I think that tsarina would come after me the next time I visited.

you could have replied, "No, now go work out why, & I want an essay on it by tomorrow morning!"

That could have worked at times but I had worked mainly with the young and special education. If I ever decided to leave my current occupation I may very well go into teaching; the only problem is deciding between special education where I seem to have a knack or high school where questions like yours start to become interesting debates.

Yah… there are quite a few to stay away from, but then again I may never have to worry about naming anything other than pets. *smiles*

Hmmm, dilemma. Special education is Useful, high school is a lot of lippy teenagers (even with the interesting debates) & paperwork.

Over here it also involves a lot of 'crowd control' rather than actual 'education' - which could be why up to a third of British school leavers (at 16-18) are reckoned to be functionally illiterate! I don't think that many kids have "learning difficulties", well, not beyond they have never learned to sit down, be quiet & LISTEN for once anyhow! But it's many many years since I've had contact with Education - & that was when our two were in school.
